Mrs.Rushworthsubmitted;andthequestionofsurveyingthegrounds,withthewhoandthehow,waslikelytobemorefullyagitated,andMrs.Norriswasbeginningtoarrangebywhatjunctionofcarriagesandhorsesmostcouldbedone,whentheyoungpeople,meetingwithanoutwarddoor,temptinglyopenonaflightofstepswhichledimmediatelytoturfandshrubs,andallthesweetsofpleasure-grounds,asbyoneimpulse,onewishforairandliberty,allwalkedout.
“Supposeweturndownhereforthepresent,”saidMrs.Rushworth,civillytakingthehintandfollowingthem.“Herearethegreatestnumberofourplants,andherearethecuriouspheasants.”
“Query,”saidMr.Crawford,lookingroundhim,“whetherwemaynotfindsomethingtoemployusherebeforewegofarther?Iseewallsofgreatpromise.Mr.Rushworth,shallwesummonacouncilonthislawn?”
“James,”saidMrs.Rushworthtoherson,“Ibelievethewildernesswillbenewtoalltheparty.TheMissBertramshaveneverseenthewildernessyet.”
Noobjectionwasmade,butforsometimethereseemednoinclinationtomoveinanyplan,ortoanydistance.Allwereattractedatfirstbytheplantsorthepheasants,andalldispersedaboutinhappyindependence.Mr.Crawfordwasthefirsttomoveforwardtoexaminethecapabilitiesofthatendofthehouse.
