           Theyhadlongsincegotclearofthesmokeandfurnaces,exceptinoneortwosolitaryinstances,whereafactoryplantedamongfieldswitheredthespaceaboutit,likeaburningmountain.Whentheyhadpassedthroughthistown,theyenteredagainuponthecountry,andbegantodrawneartheirplaceofdestination.

           Itwasnotsonear,however,butthattheyspentanothernightupontheroad;notthattheirdoingsowasquiteanactofnecessity,butthattheschoolmaster,whentheyapproachedwithinafewmilesofhisvillage,hadafidgetysenseofhisdignityasthenewclerk,andwasunwillingtomakehisentryindustyshoes,andtravel-disordereddress.Itwasafine,clear,autumnmorning,whentheycameuponthesceneofhispromotion,andstoppedtocontemplateitsbeauties.

           ‘Seehere’sthechurch!’criedthedelightedschoolmasterinalowvoice;‘andthatoldbuildingclosebesideit,istheschoolhouse,I’llbesworn.Five-and-thirtypoundsa-yearinthisbeautifulplace!’

           Theyadmiredeverythingtheoldgreyporch,themullionedwindows,thevenerablegravestonesdottingthegreenchurchyard,theancienttower,theveryweathercock;thebrownthatchedroofsofcottage,barn,andhomestead,peepingfromamongthetrees;thestreamthatrippledbythedistantwater-mill;theblueWelshmountainsfaraway.Itwasforsuchaspotthechildhadweariedinthedense,dark,miserablehauntsoflabour.
