Sometimeswalkingforamileortwowhilehergrandfatherrodeinside,andsometimesevenprevailingupontheschoolmastertotakeherplaceandliedowntorest,Nelltravelledonveryhappilyuntiltheycametoalargetown,wherethewaggonstopped,andwheretheyspentanight.Theypassedalargechurch;andinthestreetswereanumberofoldhouses,builtofakindofearthorplaster,crossedandre-crossedinagreatmanydirectionswithblackbeams,whichgavethemaremarkableandveryancientlook.Thedoors,too,werearchedandlow,somewithoakenportalsandquaintbenches,wheretheformerinhabitantshadsatonsummerevenings.Thewindowswerelatticedinlittlediamondpanes,thatseemedtowinkandblinkuponthepassengersasiftheyweredimofsight.
