Nellwasratherdisheartened,whentheystoppedatakindofwharflateintheafternoon,tolearnfromoneofthementhattheywouldnotreachtheirplaceofdestinationuntilnextday,andthat,ifshehadnoprovisionwithher,shehadbetterbuyitthere.Shehadbutafewpence,havingalreadybargainedwiththemforsomebread,butevenoftheseitwasnecessarytobeverycareful,astheywereontheirwaytoanutterlystrangeplace,withnoresourcewhatever.Asmallloafandamorselofcheese,therefore,wereallshecouldafford,andwiththeseshetookherplaceintheboatagain,and,afterhalfanhour’sdelayduringwhichthemenweredrinkingatthepublic-house,proceededonthejourney.
Theybroughtsomebeerandspiritsintotheboatwiththem,andwhatwithdrinkingfreelybefore,andagainnow,weresooninafairwayofbeingquarrelsomeandintoxicated.Avoidingthesmallcabin,therefore,whichwasverydarkandfilthy,andtowhichtheyofteninvitedbothherandhergrandfather,Nellsatintheopenairwiththeoldmanbyherside:listeningtotheirboisteroushostswithapalpitatingheart,andalmostwishingherselfsafeonshoreagainthoughsheshouldhavetowalkallnight.
Theywere,intruth,veryrugged,noisyfellows,andquitebrutalamongthemselves,thoughcivilenoughtotheirtwopassengers.
