Thinking,asshehadthoughtwithgreattrepidationmorethanoncebefore,thatthemenwhomshehadseenwithhergrandfathermight,perhaps,intheireagernessforthebooty,followthem,andregainingtheirinfluenceoverhim,sethersatnought;andthatiftheywentwiththesemen,alltracesofthemmustsurelybelostatthatspot;determinedtoaccepttheoffer.Theboatcameclosetothebankagain,andbeforeshehadhadanymoretimeforconsideration,sheandhergrandfatherwereonboard,andglidingsmoothlydownthecanal.
Thesunshonepleasantlyonthebrightwater,whichwassometimesshadedbytrees,andsometimesopentoawideextentofcountry,intersectedbyrunningstreams,andrichwithwoodedhills,cultivatedland,andshelteredfarms.Nowandthen,avillagewithitsmodestspire,thatchedroofs,andgable-ends,wouldpeepoutfromamongthetrees;and,morethanonce,adistanttown,withgreatchurchtowersloomingthroughitssmoke,andhighfactoriesorworkshopsrisingabovethemassofhouses,wouldcomeinview,and,bythelengthoftimeitlingeredinthedistance,showthemhowslowlytheytravelled.Theirwaylay,forthemostpart,throughthelowgrounds,andopenplains;andexceptthesedistantplaces,andoccasionallysomemenworkinginthefields,orloungingonthebridgesunderwhichtheypassed,toseethemcreepalong,nothingencroachedontheirmonotonousandsecludedtrack.
