OnemorningKitdroveMrAbeltotheNotary’soffice,ashesometimesdid,andhavingsethimdownatthehouse,wasabouttodriveofftoaliverystablehardby,whenthissameMrChucksteremergedfromtheofficedoor,andcried‘Woa-a-a-a-a-a!’—dwellinguponthenotealongtime,forthepurposeofstrikingterrorintothepony’sheart,andassertingthesupremacyofmanovertheinferioranimals.
‘Pullup,Snobby,’criedMrChuckster,addressinghimselftoKit.‘You’rewantedinsidehere.’
‘HasMrAbelforgottenanything,Iwonder?’saidKitashedismounted.
‘Asknoquestions,Snobby,’returnedMrChuckster,‘butgoandsee.Woa-a-athen,willyou?Ifthatponywasmine,I’dbreakhim.’
‘Youmustbeverygentlewithhim,ifyouplease,’saidKit,‘oryou’llfindhimtroublesome.You’dbetternotkeeponpullinghisears,please.Iknowhewon’tlikeit.’
TothisremonstranceMrChucksterdeignednootheranswer,thanaddressingKitwithaloftyanddistantairas‘youngfeller,’andrequestinghimtocutandcomeagainwithallspeed.The‘youngfeller’complying,MrChucksterputhishandsinhispockets,andtriedtolookasifhewerenotmindingthepony,buthappenedtobeloungingtherebyaccident.
