AlthoughKitwasintheveryhighestfavourwiththeoldladyandgentleman,andMrAbel,andBarbara,itiscertainthatnomemberofthefamilyevincedsucharemarkablepartialityforhimastheself-willedpony,who,frombeingthemostobstinateandopinionatedponyonthefaceoftheearth,was,inhishands,themeekestandmosttractableofanimals.ItistruethatinexactproportionashebecamemanageablebyKithebecameutterlyungovernablebyanybodyelse(asifhehaddeterminedtokeephiminthefamilyatallrisksandhazards),andthat,evenundertheguidanceofhisfavourite,hewouldsometimesperformagreatvarietyofstrangefreaksandcapers,totheextremediscomposureoftheoldlady’snerves;butasKitalwaysrepresentedthatthiswasonlyhisfun,orawayhehadofshowinghisattachmenttohisemployers,MrsGarlandgraduallysufferedherselftobepersuadedintothebelief,inwhichsheatlastbecamesostronglyconfirmed,thatif,inoneoftheseebullitions,hehadoverturnedthechaise,shewouldhavebeenquitesatisfiedthathediditwiththeverybestintentions.
