           MrSwiveller,assenting,armedhimselfwithhisstoolandthelargeruler,andrepairedwithhisemployertothesceneofaction,whereMissBrasswasalreadyringingahand-bellwithallhermight,andyetwithoutproducingthesmallesteffectupontheirmysteriouslodger.

           ‘Therearehisboots,MrRichard!’saidBrass.

           ‘Veryobstinate-lookingarticlestheyaretoo,’quothRichardSwiveller.Andtruly,theywereassturdyandbluffapairofbootsasonewouldwishtosee;asfirmlyplantedonthegroundasiftheirowner’slegsandfeethadbeeninthem;andseeming,withtheirbroadsolesandblunttoes,toholdpossessionoftheirplacebymainforce.

           ‘Ican’tseeanythingbutthecurtainofthebed,’saidBrass,applyinghiseyetothekeyholeofthedoor.‘Isheastrongman,MrRichard?’

           ‘Very,’answeredDick.

           WhileMrBrass,withhiseyecuriouslytwistedintothekeyhole,utteredthesesoundsasameansofattractingthelodger’sattention,andwhileMissBrasspliedthehand-bell,MrSwivellerputhisstoolcloseagainstthewallbythesideofthedoor,andmountingonthetopandstandingboltupright,sothatifthelodgerdidmakearush,hewouldmostprobablypasshiminitsonwardfury,beganaviolentbatterywiththerulerupontheupperpanelsofthedoor.
