           Frommanydreamsoframblingthroughlightandsunnyplaces,butwithsomevagueobjectunattainedwhichranindistinctlythroughthemall,sheawoketofindthatitwasyetnight,andthatthestarswereshiningbrightlyinthesky.Atlength,thedaybegantoglimmer,andthestarstogrowpaleanddim.Assoonasshewassureofthis,shearose,anddressedherselfforthejourney.

           Theoldmanwasyetasleep,andasshewasunwillingtodisturbhim,shelefthimtoslumberon,untilthesunrose.Hewasanxiousthattheyshouldleavethehousewithoutaminute’slossoftime,andwassoonready.

           Thechildthentookhimbythehand,andtheytrodlightlyandcautiouslydownthestairs,tremblingwheneveraboardcreaked,andoftenstoppingtolisten.Theoldmanhadforgottenakindofwalletwhichcontainedthelightburdenhehadtocarry;andthegoingbackafewstepstofetchitseemedaninterminabledelay.

           Atlasttheyreachedthepassageonthegroundfloor,wherethesnoringofMrQuilpandhislegalfriendsoundedmoreterribleintheirearsthantheroarsoflions.Theboltsofthedoorwererusty,anddifficulttounfastenwithoutnoise.Whentheywerealldrawnback,itwasfoundtobelocked,andworstofall,thekeywasgone.Thenthechildremembered,forthefirsttime,oneofthenurseshavingtoldherthatQuilpalwayslockedboththehouse-doorsatnight,andkeptthekeysonthetableinhisbedroom.
