           Theirclothes,bettermade,seemedoffinercloth,andtheirhair,broughtforwardincurlstowardsthetemples,glossywithmoredelicatepomades.Theyhadthecomplexionofwealththatclearcomplexionthatisheightenedbythepallorofporcelain,theshimmerofsatin,theveneerofoldfurniture,andthatanorderedregimenofexquisitenurturemaintainsatitsbest.Theirnecksmovedeasilyintheirlowcravats,theirlongwhiskersfellovertheirturned-downcollars,theywipedtheirlipsuponhandkerchiefswithembroideredinitialsthatgaveforthasubtleperfume.
