Ourencounterwiththesharkwasthefirstgreatdangerthathadbefallenussincelandingonthisisland;andwefeltveryseriouslyaffectedbyit,especiallywhenweconsideredthatwehadsooftenunwittinglyincurredthesamedangerbeforewhilebathing.Wewerenowforcedtotaketofishingagainintheshallowwateruntilweshouldsucceedinconstructingaraft.Whattroubledusmost,however,wasthatwewerecompelledtoforegoourmorningswimming-excursions.Wedid,indeed,continuetoenjoyourbatheintheshallowwater;butJackandIfoundthatonegreatsourceofourenjoymentwasgonewhenwecouldnolongerdivedownamongthebeautifulcoralgrovesatthebottomofthelagoon.Wehadcometobesofondofthisexercise,andtotakesuchaninterestinwatchingtheformationsofcoralandthegambolsofthemanybeautifulfishamongsttheforestofredandgreenseaweeds,thatwehadbecomequitefamiliarwiththeappearanceofthefishandthelocalitiesthattheychieflyhaunted.Wehadalsobecomeexpertdivers.Butwemadeitarulenevertostaylongunderwateratatime.Jacktoldmethattodosooftenwasbadforthelungs,andinsteadofaffordingusenjoyment,woulderelongdousaseriousinjury.Soweneverstayedatthebottomaslongaswemighthavedone,butcameupfrequentlytothetopforfreshair,anddiveddownagainimmediately.
