Sometimes,whenJackhappenedtobeinahumorousframe,hewouldseathimselfatthebottomoftheseaononeofthebrain-corals,asifhewereseatedonalargepaddock-stool,andthenmakefacesatmeinorder,ifpossible,tomakemelaughunderwater.Atfirst,whenhetookmeunawares,henearlysucceeded,andIhadtoshoottothesurfaceinordertolaugh;butafterwardsIbecameawareofhisintentions,andbeingnaturallyofagravedisposition,Ihadnodifficultyinrestrainingmyself.IusedoftentowonderhowpoorPeterkinwouldhavelikedtobewithus;andhesometimesexpressedmuchregretatbeingunabletojoinus.Iusedtodomybesttogratifyhim,poorfellow,byrelatingallthewondersthatwesaw;butthis,insteadofsatisfying,seemedonlytowhethiscuriositythemore,soonedayweprevailedonhimtotrytogodownwithus.Butalthoughabraveboyineveryotherway,Peterkinwasverynervousinthewater;anditwaswithdifficultywegothimtoconsenttobetakendown,forhecouldneverhavemanagedtopushhimselfdowntothebottomwithoutassistance.Butnosoonerhadwepulledhimdownayardorsointothedeep,clearwaterthanhebegantostruggleandkickviolently;sowewereforcedtolethimgo,whenheroseoutofthewaterlikeacork,gavealoudgaspandafrightfulroar,andstruckoutforthelandwiththeutmostpossiblehaste.
Nowallthispleasureweweretoforego,andwhenwethoughtthereon,JackandIfeltverymuchdepressedinourspirits.
