           Itwaseveningbeforewelefttheislandofthepenguins.Aswehadmadeupourmindstoencampforthenightonasmallislandwhereongrewafewcocoa-nuttrees,whichwasabouttwomilesoff,welay-toouroarswithsomeenergy.Butadangerwasinstoreforuswhichwehadnotanticipated.Thewind,whichhadcarriedussoquicklytoPenguinIsland,freshenedaseveningdrewontoastiffbreeze,andbeforewehadmadehalfthedistancetothesmallisland,itbecamearegulargale.Althoughitwasnotsodirectlyagainstusastopreventourrowinginthecoursewewishedtogo,yetitcheckedusverymuch;andalthoughtheforceoftheseawassomewhatbrokenbytheisland,thewavessoonbegantoriseandtorolltheirbrokencrestsagainstoursmallcraft,sothatshebegantotakeinwater,andwehadmuchadotokeepourselvesafloat.Atlastthewindandseatogetherbecamesoviolentthatwefounditimpossibletomaketheisland;soJacksuddenlyputtheheadoftheboatround,andorderedPeterkinandmetohoistacornerofthesail,intendingtorunbacktoPenguinIsland.

           "Weshallatleasthavetheshelterofthebushes,"hesaidastheboatflewbeforethewind,"andthepenguinswillkeepuscompany."

           AsJackspoke,thewindsuddenlyshiftedandblewsomuchagainstusthatwewereforcedtohoistmoreofthesailinordertobeatupfortheisland,beingbythischangethrownmuchtoleewardofit.Whatmademattersworsewasthatthegalecameinsqualls,sothatweweremorethanoncenearlyupset.
