"Ivoteforlanding;sopullin,lads!"saidJack,givingastrokewithhisoarthatmadetheboatspin.Inafewsecondswerantheboatintoalittlecreek,wherewemadeherfasttoaprojectingpieceofcoral,andrunningupthebeach,enteredtheranksofthepenguins,armedwithourcudgelsandourspear.Weweregreatlysurprisedtofindthatinsteadofattackingus,orshowingsignsoffearatourapproach,thesecuriousbirdsdidnotmovefromtheirplacesuntilwelaidhandsonthem,andmerelyturnedtheireyesonusinsolemn,stupidwonderaswepassed.Therewasoneoldpenguin,however,thatbegantowalkslowlytowardsthesea;andPeterkintookitintohisheadthathewouldtrytointerruptitsprogress,soheranbetweenitandtheseaandbrandishedhiscudgelinitsface.Butthisprovedtobearesoluteoldbird.Itwouldnotretreat;nay,more,itwouldnotceasetoadvance,butbattledwithPeterkinbravely,anddrovehimbeforeituntilitreachedthesea.HadPeterkinusedhisclubhecouldeasilyhavefelledit,nodoubt;butashehadnowishtodosocruelanactmerelyoutofsport,heletthebirdescape.
Wespentfullythreehoursonthisislandinwatchingthehabitofthesecuriousbirds;butwhenwefinallyleftthem,weallthreeconcluded,aftermuchconsultation,thattheywerethemostwonderfulcreatureswehadeverseen,andfurther,wethoughtitprobablethattheywerethemostwonderfulcreaturesintheworld!
