           Afterthebattlewasover,thesavagescrowdedroundusandgazedatusinsurprise,whiletheycontinuedtopouruponusafloodofquestions,which,beingwhollyunintelligible,ofcoursewecouldnotanswer.However,bywayofputtinganendtoit,Jacktookthechief(whohadrecoveredfromtheeffectsofhiswound)bythehandandshookitwarmly.Nosoonerdidtheblacksseethatthiswasmeanttoexpressgood-willthantheyshookhandswithusallround.AfterthisceremonywasgonethroughJackwentuptothegirl,whohadneveroncemovedfromtherockwhereshehadbeenleft,buthadcontinuedaneagerspectatorofallthathadpassed.Hemadesignstohertofollowhim,andthen,takingthechiefbythehand,wasabouttoconducthimtothebowerwhenhiseyefellonthepoorinfantwhichhadbeenthrownintotheseaandwasstilllyingontheshore.Droppingthechief’shandhehastenedtowardsit,and,tohisgreatjoy,foundittobestillalive.Wealsofoundthatthemotherwasbeginningtorecoverslowly.

           "Here,getouto’theway,"saidJack,pushingusasideaswestoopedoverthepoorwomanandendeavouredtorestoreher;"I’llsoonbringherround."Sosaying,heplacedtheinfantonherbosomandlaiditswarmcheekonhers.Theeffectwaswonderful.Thewomanopenedhereyes,feltthechild,lookedatit,andwithacryofjoy,claspeditinherarms,atthesametimeendeavouringtoriseforthepurpose,apparently,ofrushingintothewoods.

           "There,that’sallright,"saidJack,oncemoretakingthechiefbythehand.
