Whenweawokeonthefollowingmorningwefoundthatthesunwasalreadyagoodwayabovethehorizon,soIcametotheconclusionthataheavysupperisnotconducivetoearlyrising.Never-the-less,wefeltremarkablystrongandwell,andmuchdisposedtohaveourbreakfast.First,however,wehadourcustomarymorningbathe,whichrefreshedusgreatly.
Ihaveoftenwonderedverymuchinafteryearsthattheinhabitantsofmyowndearlanddidnotmakemorefrequentuseofthismostcharmingelement,water—Imeaninthewayofcoldbathing.Ofcourse,Ihaveperceivedthatitisnotconvenientforthemtogointotheseaortheriversinwinter,asweusedtodoontheCoralIsland;butthenIknewfromexperiencethatalargewashing-tubandaspongedoformamostpleasantsubstitute.Thefeelingsoffreshness,ofcleanliness,ofvigour,andextremehilaritythatalwaysfollowedmybathesinthesea—andeven,wheninEngland,myablutionsinthewash-tub—weresodelightfulthatIwouldsoonerhavegonewithoutmybreakfastthanwithoutmybatheincoldwater.Myreaderswillforgivemeforaskingwhethertheyareinthehabitofbathingthuseverymorning;andiftheyanswer"No",theywillpardonmeforrecommendingthemtobeginatonce.Oflateyears,sinceretiringfromthestirringlifeofadventurewhichIhaveledsolonginforeignclimes,Ihaveheardofasystemcalledthecold-watercure.Now,Idonotknowmuchaboutthatsystem;soIdonotmeantoupholdit,neitherdoIintendtorunitdown.
