Thewood-pigeonwasthensplitopen,quiteflat,washedcleaninsaltwater,andtreatedinasimilarmanner.Whilethesewerecookingwescrapedaholeinthesandandashesunderthefire,intowhichweputourvegetablesandcoveredthemup.
Thetaro-rootwasofanovalshape,abouttenincheslongandfourorfivethick.Itwasofamottled-greycolour,andhadathickrind.WefounditsomewhatlikeanIrishpotato,andexceedinglygood.Theyamwasroundish,andhadaroughbrownskin.Itwasverysweetandwellflavoured.Thepotato,weweresurprisedtofind,wasquitesweetandexceedinglypalatable,asalsoweretheplums—and,indeed,theporkandpigeontoo—whenwecametotastethem.Altogether,thiswasdecidedlythemostluxurioussupperwehadenjoyedformanyaday.Jacksaiditwasout-of-sightbetterthanweevergotonboardship;andPeterkinsaidhefearedthatifweshouldremainlongontheislandhewouldinfalliblybecomeagluttonoranepicure,whereatJackremarkedthatheneednotfearthat,forhewasbothalready!Andso,havingeatenourfill,notforgettingtofinishoffwithaplum,welaidourselvescomfortablydowntosleep,uponacouchofbranches,undertheoverhangingledgeofacoralrock.
