Itwaswithfeelingsofawe,notunmingledwithfear,thatInowseatedmyselfonthecabinskylightandgazedupontherigidfeaturesofmylatecomrade,whilemymindwanderedoverhispasthistoryandcontemplatedwithanxietymypresentposition.AloneinthemidstofthewidePacific,havingamostimperfectknowledgeofnavigation,andinaschoonerrequiringatleasteightmenasherpropercrew!ButIwillnottaxthereader’spatiencewithaminutedetailofmyfeelingsanddoingsduringthefirstfewdaysthatfollowedthedeathofmycompanion.IwillmerelymentionthatItiedacannon-balltohisfeet,andwithfeelingsofthedeepestsorrow,consignedhimtothedeep.
Forfullyaweekafterthatasteadybreezeblewfromtheeast,andasmycourselaywestandbynorth,Imaderapidprogresstowardsmydestination.Icouldnottakeanobservation,whichIverymuchregretted,asthecaptain’squadrantwasinthecabin;butfromthedayofsettingsailfromtheislandofthesavagesIhadkeptadeadreckoning,andasIknewprettywellnowhowmuchleewaytheschoonermade,IhopedtohittheCoralIslandwithoutmuchdifficulty.InthisIwasthemoreconfidentthatIknewitspositiononthechart—which,Iunderstood,wasaverygoodone—andsohaditscorrectbearingsbycompass.
