Thiswasamostarduoustask,andmyfirstattemptswerecompletefailures,owing,inagreatdegree,tomyreprehensibleignoranceofmechanicalforces.ThefirsterrorImadewasinapplyingmyapparatusofblocksandpulleystoaropewhichwastooweak,sothattheveryfirstheaveImadebrokeitintwo,andsentmestaggeringagainsttheafter-hatch,overwhichItripped,andstrikingagainstthemain-boom,tumbleddownthecompanion-ladderintothecabin.Iwasmuchbruisedandsomewhatstunnedbythisuntowardaccident.However,IconsidereditfortunatethatIwasnotkilled.InmynextattemptImadesureofnotcomingbyasimilaraccident,soIunreevedthetacklingandfitteduplargerblocksandropes.ButalthoughtheprincipleonwhichIactedwasquietcorrect,themachinerywasnowsomassiveandheavythatthemerefrictionandstiffnessofthethickcordagepreventedmefrommovingitatall.Afterwards,however,Icametoproportionthingsmorecorrectly;butIcouldnotavoidreflectingatthetimehowmuchbetteritwouldhavebeenhadIlearnedallthisfromobservationandstudy,insteadofwaitingtillIwasforcedtoacquireitthroughthepainfulandtediouslessonsofexperience.
