           OfcourseIwas,tosomeextent,anxiouslestanothersquallshouldcome;butImadethebestprovisionIcouldinthecircumstances,andconcludedthatbylettinggotheweather-bracesofthetopsailsandthetopsailhalyardsatthesametime,Ishouldtherebyrenderthesesailsalmostpowerless.Besidesthis,Iproposedtomyselftokeepasharplookoutonthebarometerinthecabin;andifIobservedatanytimeasuddenfallinit,IresolvedthatIwouldinstantlysetaboutmymultiformappliancesforreducingsail,soastoavoidbeingtakenunawares.ThusIsailedprosperouslyfortwoweeks,withafairwind,sothatIcalculatedImustbedrawingneartotheCoralIsland,atthethoughtofwhichmyheartboundedwithjoyfulexpectation.

           TheonlybookIfoundonboard,afteracarefulsearch,wasavolumeofCaptainCook’svoyages.
