Ourexaminationofthelittlevalleyprovedtobealtogethermostsatisfactory.Wefoundinitnotonlysimilartreestothosewehadalreadyseeninourownvalley,butalsooneortwoothersofadifferentspecies.Wehadalsothesatisfactionofdiscoveringapeculiarvegetable,which,Jackconcluded,mustcertainlybethatofwhichhehadreadasbeingverycommonamongtheSouthSeaIslanders,andwhichwasnamedtaro.Alsowefoundalargesupplyofyams,andanotherrootlikeapotatoinappearance.Asthesewereallquitenewtous,weregardedourlotasamostfortunateone,inbeingthuscastonanislandwhichwassoprolificandsowellstoredwithallthenecessariesoflife.Longafterwardswefoundoutthatthisislandofourswasnobetterintheserespectsthanthousandsofotherislandsinthoseseas.Indeed,manyofthemweremuchricherandmoreproductive;butthatdidnotrenderusthelessgratefulforourpresentgoodfortune.Weeachputoneoftheserootsinourpocket,intendingtousethemforoursupper—ofwhichmorehereafter.Wealsosawmanybeautifulbirdshere,andtracesofsomefour-footedanimalagain.Meanwhilethesunbegantodescend;sowereturnedtotheshoreandpushedon,roundthespoutingrocks,intothenextvalley.ThiswasthatvalleyofwhichIhavespokenasrunningacrosstheentireisland.Itwasbyfarthelargestandmostbeautifulthatwehadyetlookedupon.
