As,however,aman’sdifficultiesusuallysethimupondevisingmethodstoovercomethem,wherebyheoftendiscoversbetterthingsthanthosehemayhavelost,sothisourdifficultyinducedustothinkofsearchingforalargepoolamongtherocks,wherethewatershouldbedeepenoughfordiving,yetsosurroundedbyrocksastopreventsharksfromgettingatus.Andsuchapoolweafterwardsfound,whichprovedtobeverymuchbetterthanourmostsanguinehopesanticipated.Itwassituatednotmorethantenminutes’walkfromourcamp,andwasintheformofasmall,deepbayorbasin,theentrancetowhich,besidesbeingnarrow,wassoshallowthatnofishsolargeasasharkcouldgetin-atleast,notunlessheshouldbearemarkablythinone.
Insideofthisbasin,whichwecalledourWaterGarden,thecoralformationsweremuchmorewonderful,andtheseaweedplantsfarmorelovelyandvividlycoloured,thaninthelagoonitself.Andthewaterwassoclearandstillthat,althoughverydeep,youcouldseetheminutestobjectatthebottom.Besidesthis,therewasaledgeofrockwhichoverhungthebasinatitsdeepestpart,fromwhichwecoulddivepleasantly,andwhereonPeterkincouldsitandseenotonlyallthewondersIhaddescribedtohim,butalsoseeJackandmecreepingamongstthemarineshrubberyatthebottom,like—asheexpressedit—"twogreatwhitesea-monsters."
