Inanothermomentthesharkrose.Jackdrewhislegsuddenlyfromthewaterandthrewitoverthelog.Themonster’ssnoutrubbedagainstthelogasitpassed,andrevealeditshideousjaws,intowhichJackinstantlyplungedthepaddleandthrustitdownitsthroat.SoviolentwasthisactthatJackrosetohisfeetinperformingit;thelogwastherebyrolledcompletelyover,andwewereoncemoreplungedintothewater.Weallrose,splutteringandgasping,inamoment.
"Now,then,strikeoutforshore!"criedJack.—"Here,Peterkin,catchholdofmycollar,andkickoutwithawill!"
Peterkindidashewasdesired,andJackstruckoutwithsuchforcethathecutthroughthewaterlikeaboat;whileI,beingfreefromallencumbrance,succeededinkeepingupwithhim.Aswehadbythistimedrawnprettyneartotheshore,afewminutesmoresufficedtocarryusintoshallowwater;andfinally,welandedinsafety,thoughverymuchexhausted,andnotalittlefrightened,byourterribleadventure.
