           AheavysighandalookofblankdespairshowedthatpoorPeterkinhadtriedandfailedagain.

           "Nevermind,lad,"saidJackinavoiceofsympathy;"we’llmoveonandofferittosomeotherfish."Sosaying,Jackpliedhispaddle;butscarcelyhadhemovedfromthespotwhenafishwithanenormousheadandalittlebodydartedfromunderarockandswallowedthebaitatonce.

           "Gothimthistimethat’safact!"criedPeterkin,haulingintheline."He’sswallowedthebaitrightdowntohistail,Ideclare!Oh,whatathumper!"

           Asthefishcamestrugglingtothesurfaceweleanedforwardtoseeit,andoverbalancedthelog.Peterkinthrewhisarmsroundthefish’sneck,andinanotherinstantwewereallflounderinginthewater!

           Ashoutoflaughterburstfromusaswerosetothesurface,likethreedrownedrats,andseizedholdofthelog.Wesoonrecoveredourposition,andsatmorewarily;whilePeterkinsecuredthefish,whichhadwell-nighescapedinthemidstofourstruggles.Itwaslittleworthhaving,however.But,asPeterkinremarked,itwasbetterthanthesmoutshehadbeencatchingforthelasttwoorthreedays;sowelaiditonthelogbeforeus,andhavingrebaitedtheline,droppeditinagainforanother.

           Now,whilewewerethusintentuponoursport,ourattentionwassuddenlyattractedbyarippleonthesea,justafewyardsawayfromus.Peterkinshoutedtoustopaddleinthatdirection,ashethoughtitwasabigfishandwemighthaveachanceofcatchingit.
