           Thehorrorwithwhichweheardthismaywellbeimagined;foritmustberememberedthatourlegswerehangingdowninthewater,andwecouldnotventuretopullthemupwithoutupsettingthelog.Peterkininstantlyhauleduptheline,andgraspinghispaddle,exertedhimselftotheutmost,whilewealsodidourbesttomakeforshore.Butwewereagoodwayoff,andthelogbeing,asIhavebeforesaid,veryheavy,movedbutslowlythroughthewater.Wenowsawthesharkquitedistinctlyswimmingroundandroundus,itssharpfineverynowandthenprotrudingabovethewater.Fromitsactiveandunsteadymotions,Jackknewitwasmakingupitsmindtoattackus;soheurgedusvehementlytopaddleforourlives,whilehehimselfsetustheexample.Suddenlyheshouted,"Lookout!therehecomes!"andinasecondwesawthemonstrousfishdivecloseunderusandturnhalf-overonhisside.Butweallmadeagreatcommotionwithourpaddles,which,nodoubt,frighteneditawayforthattime,aswesawitimmediatelyaftercirclingroundusasbefore.

           "Throwthefishtohim!"criedJackinaquick,suppressedvoice;"we’llmaketheshoreintimeyetifwecankeephimoffforafewminutes."

           Peterkinstoppedoneinstanttoobeythecommand,andthenpliedhispaddleagainwithallhismight.Nosoonerhadthefishfallenonthewaterthanweobservedthesharktosink.
