           Havingbeenthussuccessfulinlaunchingourvessel,wenextshapedtheleversintorudeoarsorpaddles,andthenattemptedtoembark.Thiswaseasyenoughtodo;butafterseatingourselvesastridethelog,itwaswiththeutmostdifficultywekeptitfromrollingroundandplungingusintothewater.Notthatwemindedthatmuch;butwepreferred,ifpossible,tofishindryclothes.Tobesure,ourtrouserswerenecessarilywet,asourlegsweredanglinginthewateroneachsideofthelog;butastheycouldbeeasilydried,wedidnotcare.Afterhalf-an-hour’spractice,webecameexpertenoughtokeepourbalanceprettysteadily.ThenPeterkinlaiddownhispaddle,andhavingbaitedhislinewithawholeoyster,droppeditintodeepwater.

           "Now,then,Jack,"saidhe,"becautious;steerclearo’thatseaweed.There!that’sit;gently,nowgently.IseeafellowatleastafootlongdowntherecomingtoHa!that’sit!Ohbother!he’soff!"

           "Didhebite?"saidJack,urgingthelogonwardsalittlewithhispaddle.

           "Bite?Ay!hetookitintohismouth,butthemomentIbegantohaulheopenedhisjawsandletitoutagain."

           "Lethimswallowitnexttime,"saidJack,laughingatthemelancholyexpressionofPeterkin’svisage.

           "Therehe’sagain!"criedPeterkin,hiseyesflashingwithexcitement."Lookout!Now,then!No!Yes!No!Why,thebrutewon’tswallowit!"

           "Trytohaulhimupbythemouth,then!"criedJack."Doitgently."
