Wehadnowcometothepointofrocksonwhichtheshiphadstruck,butdidnotfindasinglearticle,althoughwesearchedcarefullyamongthecoralrocks,whichatthisplacejuttedoutsofarasnearlytojointhereefthatencircledtheisland.Justaswewereabouttoreturn,however,wesawsomethingblackfloatinginalittlecovethathadescapedourobservation.Runningforward,wedrewitfromthewater,andfoundittobealong,thick,leatherboot,suchasfishermenathomewear;andafewpacesfartheron,wepickedupitsfellow.Weatoncerecognisedtheseashavingbelongedtoourcaptain,forhehadwornthemduringthewholeofthestorminordertoguardhislegsfromthewavesandspraythatconstantlywashedoverourdecks.Myfirstthoughtonseeingthemwasthatourdearcaptainhadbeendrowned;butJacksoonputmymindmoreatrestonthatpointbysayingthatifthecaptainhadbeendrownedwiththebootson,hewouldcertainlyhavebeenwashedashorealongwiththem,andthathehadnodoubtwhateverhehadkickedthemoffwhileintheseathathemightswimmoreeasily.
