Peterkindidashewasdirected,andwebothburstintouncontrollablelaughteratthechangesthatinstantlypassedoverhisexpressivecountenance.Nosoonerhadheputthenuttohismouth,andthrownbackhisheadinordertocatchwhatcameoutofit,thanhiseyesopenedtotwicetheirordinarysizewithastonishment,whilehisthroatmovedvigorouslyintheactofswallowing.Thenasmileandalookofintensedelightoverspreadhisface,except,indeed,themouth,which,beingfirmlyfixedtotheholeinthenut,couldnottakepartintheexpression;butheendeavouredtomakeupforthisbywinkingatusexcessivelywithhisrighteye.Atlengthhestopped,anddrawingalongbreath,exclaimed:
"Nectar!perfectnectar!—Isay,Jack,you’reaBriton—thebestfellowIevermetinmylife—Onlytastethat!"saidhe,turningtomeandholdingthenuttomymouth.Iimmediatelydrank,andcertainlyIwasmuchsurprisedatthedelightfulliquidthatflowedcopiouslydownmythroat.Itwasextremelycool,andhadasweettaste,mingledwithacid;infact,itwasthelikestthingtolemonadeIevertasted,andwasmostgratefulandrefreshing.IhandedthenuttoJack,who,aftertastingit,said,"Now,Peterkin,youunbeliever!Ineversawortastedacocoa-nutinmylifebefore,exceptthosesoldinshopsathome;butIoncereadthatthegreennutscontainthatstuff;andyouseeitistrue."
"And,pray,"askedPeterkin,"whatsortof‘stuff’doestheripenutcontain?"
"Ahollowkernel,"answeredJack,"withaliquidlikemilkinit;butitdoesnotsatisfythirstsowellashunger.Itisverywholesomefood,Ibelieve."
"Meatanddrinkonthesametree!"criedPeterkin;"washinginthesea,lodgingontheground—andallfornothing!
