IwasgreatlyalarmedatJack’sspeech;butIconfessIthoughtlessofwhathesaidthanoftheearnest,anxiousmannerinwhichhesaidit,anditwaswithveryuncomfortablefeelingsthatPeterkinandIfollowedhimquicklyintothewoods.
"Howunfortunate,"saidIaswegainedtheshelterofthebushes,"thatwehaveforgottenourarms!"
"Itmattersnot,"saidJack;"hereareclubsenoughandtospare."Ashespoke,helaidhishandonabundleofstoutpolesofvarioussizes,whichPeterkin’sever-busyhandshadformed,duringourfrequentvisitstothecliff,fornootherpurpose,apparently,thanthatofhavingsomethingtodo.
Weeachselectedastoutclubaccordingtoourseveraltastesandlaydownbehindarock,whencewecouldseethecanoesapproachwithoutourselvesbeingseen.Atfirstwemadeanoccasionalremarkontheirappearance;butaftertheyenteredthelagoonanddrewnearthebeach,weceasedtospeak,andgazedwithintenseinterestatthescenebeforeus.
Wenowobservedthattheforemostcanoewasbeingchasedbytheother,andthatitcontainedafewwomenandchildrenaswellasmen—perhapsfortysoulsaltogether—whilethecanoewhichpursueditcontainedonlymen.Theyseemedtobeaboutthesameinnumber,butwerebetterarmed,andhadtheappearanceofbeingawar-party.Bothcrewswerepaddlingwithalltheirmight,anditseemedasifthepursuersexertedthemselvestoovertakethefugitiveseretheycouldland.Inthis,however,theyfailed.
