Theforemostcanoemadeforthebeachclosebeneaththerocksbehindwhichwewereconcealed.Theirshortpaddlesflashedlikemeteorsinthewater,andsentupaconstantshowerofspray.Thefoamcurledfromtheprow,andtheeyesoftherowersglistenedintheirblackfacesastheystrainedeverymuscleoftheirnakedbodies.Nordidtheyrelaxtheireffortstillthecanoestruckthebeachwithaviolentshock;then,withashoutofdefiance,thewholepartysprang,asifbymagic,fromthecanoetotheshore.Threewomen,twoofwhomcarriedinfantsintheirarms,rushedintothewoods;andthemencrowdedtothewater’sedge,withstonesintheirhands,spearslevelled,andclubsbrandished,toresistthelandingoftheirenemies.
Thedistancebetweenthetwocanoeshadbeenabouthalf-a-mile,andatthegreatspeedtheyweregoing,thiswassoonpassed.Asthepursuersnearedtheshore,nosignoffearorhesitationwasnoticeable.Ontheycame,likeawildcharger—received,butreckednotof,ashowerofstones.Thecanoestruck,andwithayellthatseemedtoissuefromthethroatsofincarnatefiends,theyleapedintothewateranddrovetheirenemiesupthebeach.
Thebattlethatimmediatelyensuedwasfrightfultobehold.Mostofthemenwieldedclubsofenormoussizeandcuriousshapes,withwhichtheydashedouteachother’sbrains.Astheywerealmostentirelynaked,andhadtobound,stoop,leap,andrunintheirterriblehand-to-handencounters,theylookedmorelikedemonsthanhumanbeings.
