           JackandIweresitting,aswewereoftenwonttodo,ontherocksatSpoutingCliff,andPeterkinwaswringingthewaterfromhisgarments,havingrecentlyfallenbyaccidentintotheseaathinghewasconstantlydoingwhenourattentionwassuddenlyarrestedbytwoobjectswhichappearedonthehorizon.

           "Whatareyon,thinkyou?"Isaid,addressingJack.

           "Ican’timagine,"answeredhe."I’venoticedthemforsometime,andfanciedtheywereblacksea-gulls;butthemoreIlookatthem,themoreIfeelconvincedtheyaremuchlargerthangulls."

           "Hallo!what’swrong?"inquiredPeterkin,comingup.

           "Lookthere,"saidJack.

           "Whales!"criedPeterkin,shadinghiseyeswithhishand."Noehcantheybeboats,Jack?"

           Ourheartsbeatwithexcitementattheverythoughtofseeinghumanfacesagain.

           "Ithinkyouareaboutright,Peterkin.Buttheyseemtometomovestrangelyforboats,"saidJackinalowtone,asifheweretalkingtohimself.

           InoticedthatashadeofanxietycrossedJack’scountenanceashegazedlongandintentlyatthetwoobjects,whichwerenownearingusfast.Atlasthesprangtohisfeet."Theyarecanoes,Ralph!whetherwar-canoesornot,Icannottell;butthisIknowthatallthenativesoftheSouthSeaIslandsarefiercecannibals,andtheyhavelittlerespectforstrangers.Wemusthideiftheylandhere,whichIearnestlyhopetheywillnotdo."
