DivingintheWaterGardenalsocontinuedtoaffordusasmuchpleasureasever,andPeterkinbegantobealittlemoreexpertinthewaterfromconstantpractice.AsforJackandme,webegantofeelasifwaterwereournativeelement,andrevelledinitwithsomuchconfidenceandcomfortthatPeterkinsaidhefearedwewouldturnintofishsomedayandswimoffandleavehim,addingthathehadbeenforalongtimeobservingthatJackwasbecomingmoreandmorelikeasharkeveryday.WhereuponJackremarkedthatifhe(Peterkin)werechangedintoafish,hewouldcertainlyturnintonothingbetterorbiggerthanashrimp.PoorPeterkindidnotenvyusourdelightfulexcursionsunderwater—except,indeed,whenJackwoulddivedowntothebottomoftheWaterGarden,sitdownonarock,andlookupandmakefacesathim.Peterkindidfeelenviousthen,andoftensaidhewouldgiveanythingtobeabletodothat.IwasmuchamusedwhenPeterkinsaidthis;forifhecouldonlyhaveseenhisownfacewhenhehappenedtotakeashortdive,hewouldhaveseenthatJack’swasfarsurpassedbyit—thegreatdifferencebeing,however,thatJackmadefacesonpurpose,Peterkincouldn’thelpit!
Now,whilewewereengagedwiththeseoccupationsandamusements,aneventoccurredonedaywhichwasasunexpectedasitwasexceedinglyalarmingandveryhorrible.
