Slowlyandmajesticallyitcameon,acquiringgreatervolumeandvelocityasitadvanced,untilitassumedtheformofaclearwateryarch,whichsparkledinthebrightsun.Onitcamewithresistlessandsolemnmajesty,theupperedgelippedgentlyover,anditfellwitharoarthatseemedasthoughtheheartofOceanwerebrokeninthecrashoftumultuouswater,whilethefoam-cladcoralreefappearedtotremblebeneaththemightyshock!
Wegazedlongandwonderinglyatthisgreatsight,anditwaswithdifficultywecouldtearourselvesawayfromit.AsIhaveoncebeforementioned,thiswavebrokeinmanyplacesoverthereefandscatteredsomeofitssprayintothelagoon;butinmostplacesthereefwassufficientlybroadandelevatedtoreceiveandcheckitsentireforce.Inmanyplacesthecoralrockswerecoveredwithvegetation—thebeginning,asitappearedtous,offutureislands.Thus,onthisreef,wecametoperceivehowmostofthesmallislandsofthoseseasareformed.Ononepartwesawthesprayofthebreakerwashingovertherocks,andmillionsoflittle,active,busycreaturescontinuingtheworkofbuildingupthislivingrampart.Atanotherplace,whichwasjustalittletoohighforthewavestowashoverit,thecoralinsectswerealldead;forwefoundthattheyneverdidtheirworkabovewater.TheyhadfaithfullycompletedthemightyworkwhichtheirCreatorhadgiventhemtodo,andtheywerenowalldead.Again,inotherspotstheceaselesslashingoftheseahadbrokenthedeadcoralinpieces,andcastitupintheformofsand.
