Itwasthereforeonlyneedfulthattwoofusshouldrow,whilethethirdsteeredbymeansofanoar—andrelievedtherowersoccasionally.
Firstwelandedononeofthesmallislandsandranalloverit,butsawnothingworthyofparticularnotice.Thenwelandedonalargerisland,onwhichweregrowingafewcocoa-nuttrees.Nothavingeatenanythingthatmorning,wegatheredafewofthenutsandbreakfasted.Afterthiswepulledstraightouttosea,andlandedonthecoralreef.
Thiswasindeedanovelandinterestingsighttous.Wehadnowbeensolongonshorethatwehadalmostforgottentheappearanceofbreakers,fortherewerenonewithinthelagoon.Butnow,aswestoodbesidethefoam-crestedbillowoftheopensea,alltheenthusiasmofthesailorwasawakenedinourbreasts;andaswegazedonthewidespreadruinofthatsinglemagnificentbreakerthatburstinthunderatourfeet,weforgottheCoralIslandbehindus,weforgotourbowerandthecalmreposeofthescentedwoods,weforgotallthathadpassedduringthelastfewmonths,andrememberednothingbutthestorms,thecalms,thefreshbreezes,andthesurgingbillowsoftheopensea.
Thishuge,ceaselessbreaker,towhichIhavesooftenalluded,wasamuchlargerandmoresublimeobjectthanwehadatallimaginedittobe.Itrosemanyyardsabovethelevelofthesea,andcouldbeseenapproachingatsomedistancefromthereef.
