Thishuskwasverytough,andwhenanumberofthethreadswerejoinedtogethertheyformedexcellentcordage.Atfirstwetiedthedifferentlengthstogether;butthiswassuchaclumsyandawkwardcomplicationofknotsthatwecontrived,bycarefulinterlacingoftheendstogetherbeforetwisting,tomakegoodcordageofanysizeorlengthwechose.Ofcourseitcostusmuchtimeandinfinitelabour;butJackkeptupourspiritswhenwegrewweary,andsoallthatwerequiredwasatlastconstructed.
Plankswerenowcutoffthechestnut-treesofaboutaninchthick.Theseweredressedwiththeaxe—butclumsily,foranaxeisill-adaptedforsuchwork.Fiveoftheseplanksoneachsideweresufficient;andweformedtheboatinaveryrounded,barrel-likeshape,inordertohaveaslittletwistingoftheplanksaspossible,foralthoughwecouldeasilybendthem,wecouldnoteasilytwistthem.Havingnonailstorivettheplankswith,wethrewasidetheordinaryfashionofboat-buildingandadoptedoneofourown.Theplankswerethereforeplacedoneachother’sedges,andsewedtogetherwiththetoughcordagealreadymentioned;theywerealsothussewedtothestem,thestern,andthekeel.Eachstitchortiewassixinchesapart,andwasformedthus:Threeholeswereboredintheupperplankandthreeinthelower,theholesbeingaboveeachother—thatis,inaverticalline.Throughtheseholesthecordwaspassed,andwhentied,formedapowerfulstitchofthree-ply.
