Besidesthis,weplacedbetweentheedgesoftheplankslayersofcocoa-nutfibre,which,asitswelledwhenwetted,would,wehoped,makeourlittlevesselwater-tight.Butinorderfurthertosecurethisend,wecollectedalargequantityofpitchfromthebread-fruittree,withwhich,whenboiledinouroldironpot,wepaidthewholeoftheinsideoftheboat,andwhileitwasyethot,placedlargepiecesofcocoa-nutclothonit,andthengaveitanothercoatabovethat.Thustheinteriorwascoveredwithatough,water-tightmaterial;whiletheexterior,beinguncovered,andsoexposedtotheswellingactionofthewater,was,wehoped,likelytokeeptheboatquitedry.Imayaddthatourhopeswerenotdisappointed.
WhileJackwasthusengaged,PeterkinandIsometimesassistedhim;butasourassistancewasnotmuchrequired,wemorefrequentlywenta-huntingontheextensivemud-flatsattheentranceofthelongvalleywhichlaynearesttoourbower.Herewefoundlargeflocksofducksofvariouskinds,someofthembearingsomuchresemblancetothewildducksofourowncountrythatIthinktheymusthavebeenthesame.Ontheseoccasionswetookthebowandthesling,withbothofwhichwewereoftensuccessful,thoughImustconfessthatIwastheleastso.Oursupperswerethuspleasantlyvaried,andsometimeswehadsuchaprofusionspreadoutbeforeusthatwefrequentlyknewnotwithwhichofthedaintiestobegin.
