Nowthesquaringandshapingofthese,andthecuttingofthegroovesinthekeel,wasaneasyenoughmatter,asitwasallworkfortheaxe,intheuseofwhichJackwasbecomewonderfullyexpert;butitwasquiteadifferentaffairwhenhecametonailingtheribstothekeel,forwehadnoinstrumentcapableofboringalargehole,andnonailstofastenthemwith.Wewere,indeed,muchperplexedhere;butJackatlengthdevisedaninstrumentthatservedverywell.Hetooktheremainderofourhoop-ironandbeatitintotheformofapipeorcylinder,aboutasthickasaman’sfinger.Thishedidbymeansofouraxeandtheoldrustyaxewehadfoundatthehouseofthepoormanattheothersideoftheisland.This,whenmaderedhot,boredslowlythroughthetimbers;andthebettertoretaintheheat,Jackshutuponeendofitandfilleditwithsand.True,theworkwasveryslowlydone;butitmatterednot—wehadlittleelsetodo.Twoholeswereboredineachtimber,aboutaninchandahalfapart,andalsodownintothekeel,butnotquitethrough.Intothesewereplacedstoutpegsmadeofatreecallediron-wood,andwhentheywerehammeredwellhome,thetimberswereasfirmlyfixedasiftheyhadbeennailedwithiron.Thegunwales,whichwereverystout,werefixedinasimilarmanner.Butbesidesthewoodennails,theywerefirmlylashedtothestemandstern-postsandribsbymeansofaspeciesofcordagewhichwehadcontrivedtomakeoutofthefibroushuskofthecocoa-nut.
