           TheywerenearingChicago.Signswereeverywherenumerous.Trainsflashedbythem.Acrosswidestretchesofflat,openprairietheycouldseelinesoftelegraphpolesstalkingacrossthefieldstowardthegreatcity.Farawaywereindicationsofsuburbantowns,somebigsmokestackstoweringhighintheair.

           Frequentlythereweretwo-storyframehousesstandingoutintheopenfields,withoutfenceortrees,loneoutpostsoftheapproachingarmyofhomes.

           Tothechild,thegeniuswithimagination,orthewhollyuntravelled,theapproachtoagreatcityforthefirsttimeisawonderfulthing.Particularlyifitbeevening—thatmysticperiodbetweentheglareandgloomoftheworldwhenlifeischangingfromonesphereorconditiontoanother.Ah,thepromiseofthenight.
