           ThefactthathehadinameasuremollifiedCarriewasasourceofsatisfactiontoHurstwood,butitfurnishedonlythemosttemporaryrelief.Nowthatheroppositionwasoutoftheway,hehadallofhistimetodevotetotheconsiderationofhisownerror.

           Hisconditionwasbitterintheextreme,forhedidnotwantthemiserablesumhehadstolen.Hedidnotwanttobeathief.Thatsumoranyothercouldnevercompensateforthestatewhichhehadthusfoolishlydoffed.Itcouldnotgivehimbackhishostoffriends,hisname,hishouseandfamily,norCarrie,ashehadmeanttohaveher.HewasshutoutfromChicago—fromhiseasy,comfortablestate.Hehadrobbedhimselfofhisdignity,hismerrymeetings,hispleasantevenings.Andforwhat?Themorehethoughtofitthemoreunbearableitbecame.Hebegantothinkthathewouldtryandrestorehimselftohisoldstate.Hewouldreturnthemiserablethievingsofthenightandexplain.PerhapsMoywouldunderstand.Perhapstheywouldforgivehimandlethimcomeback.
