           “Haveyouevertriedtogetinasachorusgirl?”heasked,assumingamoreconfidentialair.

           Carriebegantofeelthattherewassomethingexuberantandunnaturalinhismanner.

           “No,”shesaid.

           “That’sthewaymostgirlsbegin,”hewenton,“whogoonthestage.It’sagoodwaytogetexperience.”

           Hewasturningonheraglanceofthecompanionableandpersuasivemanner.

           “Ididn’tknowthat,”saidCarrie.

           “It’sadifficultthing,”hewenton,“butthere’salwaysachance,youknow.”Then,asifhesuddenlyremembered,hepulledouthiswatchandconsultedit.“I’veanappointmentattwo,”hesaid,“andI’vegottogotolunchnow.Wouldyoucaretocomeanddinewithme?Wecantalkitoverthere.”

           “Oh,no,”saidCarrie,thewholemotiveofthemanflashingonheratonce.“Ihaveanengagementmyself.”

           “That’stoobad,”hesaid,realisingthathehadbeenalittlebeforehandinhisofferandthatCarriewasabouttogoaway.“Comeinlater.Imayknowofsomething.”

           “Thankyou,”sheanswered,withsometrepidationandwentout.

           “Shewasgood-looking,wasn’tshe?”saidthemanager’scompanion,whohadnotcaughtallthedetailsofthegamehehadplayed.

           “Yes,inaway,”saidtheother,soretothinkthegamehadbeenlost.“She’dnevermakeanactress,though.Justanotherchorusgirl—that’sall.”

           ThislittleexperiencenearlydestroyedherambitiontocalluponthemanagerattheChicagoOperaHouse,butshedecidedtodosoafteratime.Hewasofamoresedateturnofmind.
