           “Neverstudiedforthestage?”hesaid,puttingonanairintendedasmuchtoimpresshisfriendswithhisdiscretionasCarrie.

           “No,sir.”

           “Well,Idon’tknow,”heanswered,tippinglazilybackinhischairwhileshestoodbeforehim.“Whatmakesyouwanttogetonthestage?”

           Shefeltabashedattheman’sdaring,butcouldonlysmileinanswertohisengagingsmirk,andsay:

           “Ineedtomakealiving.”

           “Oh,”heanswered,rathertakenbyhertrimappearance,andfeelingasifhemightscrapeupanacquaintancewithher.“That’sagoodreason,isn’tit?Well,Chicagoisnotagoodplaceforwhatyouwanttodo.YououghttobeinNewYork.There’smorechancethere.Youcouldhardlyexpecttogetstartedouthere.”Carriesmiledgenially,gratefulthatheshouldcondescendtoadviseherevensomuch.Henoticedthesmile,andputaslightlydifferentconstructiononit.Hethoughthesawaneasychanceforalittleflirtation.

           “Sitdown,”hesaid,pullingachairforwardfromthesideofhisdeskanddroppinghisvoicesothatthetwomenintheroomshouldnothear.Thosetwogaveeachotherthesuggestionofawink.

           “Well,I’llbegoing,Barney,”saidone,breakingawayandsoaddressingthemanager.“Seeyouthisafternoon.”

           “Allright,”saidthemanager.

           Theremainingindividualtookupapaperasiftoread.

           “Didyouhaveanyideawhatsortofpartyouwouldliketoget?”askedthemanagersoftly.

           “Oh,no,”saidCarrie.“Iwouldtakeanythingtobeginwith.”

           “Isee,”hesaid.“Doyoulivehereinthecity?”

           “Yes,sir.
