           Now,asCarriewatchedhimoutofthecornerofhereye,certainsoundthoughtscameintoherhead.Hehaderred,true,butwhathadshedone?Hewaskindlyandgood-naturedforallhisegotism.Throughoutthisargumenthehadsaidnothingveryharsh.Ontheotherhand,therewasHurstwood—agreaterdeceiverthanhe.Hehadpretendedallthisaffection,allthispassion,andhewaslyingtoherallthewhile.Oh,theperfidyofmen!Andshehadlovedhim.Therecouldbenothingmoreinthatquarter.ShewouldseeHurstwoodnomore.Shewouldwritehimandlethimknowwhatshethought.Thereuponwhatwouldshedo?Hereweretheserooms.HerewasDrouet,pleadingforhertoremain.Evidentlythingscouldgoonheresomewhatasbefore,ifallwerearranged.Itwouldbebetterthanthestreet,withoutaplacetolayherhead.

           AllthisshethoughtofasDrouetrummagedthedrawersforcollarsandlabouredlongandpainstakinglyatfindingashirt-stud.Hewasinnohurrytorushthismatter.HefeltanattractiontoCarriewhichwouldnotdown.Hecouldnotthinkthatthethingwouldendbyhiswalkingoutoftheroom.Theremustbesomewayround,somewaytomakeherownupthathewasrightandshewaswrong—topatchupapeaceandshutoutHurstwoodforever.Mercy,howheturnedattheman’sshamelessduplicity.

           “Doyouthink,”hesaid,afterafewmoments’silence,“thatyou’lltryandgetonthestage?”

           Hewaswonderingwhatshewasintending.

           “Idon’tknowwhatI’lldoyet,”saidCarrie.
