           Sheonlylookedvaguelyintothestreet.

           “Aw!comeon,”hesaid,“tellme.Willyou?”

           “Idon’tknow,”saidCarriesoftly,forcedtoanswer.

           “Promisemeyou’lldothat,”hesaid,“andwe’llquittalkingaboutit.It’llbethebestthingforyou.”

           Carrieheardhim,butshecouldnotbringherselftoanswerreasonably.Shefeltthatthemanwasgentle,andthathisinterestinherhadnotabated,anditmadehersufferapangofregret.Shewasinamosthelplessplight.

           AsforDrouet,hisattitudehadbeenthatofthejealouslover.Nowhisfeelingswereamixtureofangeratdeception,sorrowatlosingCarrie,miseryatbeingdefeated.Hewantedhisrightsinsomewayorother,andyethisrightsincludedtheretainingofCarrie,themakingherfeelhererror.

           “Willyou?”heurged.
