           Themanagerlookedathislovelyprize,sobeautiful,sowinsome,sodifficulttobewon,andmadestrangeresolutions.Hispassionhadgottentothatstagenowwhereitwasnolongercolouredwithreason.Hedidnottroubleoverlittlebarriersofthissortinthefaceofsomuchloveliness.Hewouldacceptthesituationwithallitsdifficulties;hewouldnottrytoanswertheobjectionswhichcoldtruththrustuponhim.Hewouldpromiseanything,everything,andtrusttofortunetodisentanglehim.HewouldmakeatryforParadise,whatevermightbetheresult.Hewouldbehappy,bytheLord,ifitcostallhonestyofstatement,allabandonmentoftruth.

           Carrielookedathimtenderly.Shecouldhavelaidherheaduponhisshoulder,sodelightfuldiditallseem.“Well,”shesaid,“I’lltryandgetreadythen.”

           Hurstwoodlookedintoherprettyface,crossedwithlittleshadowsofwonderandmisgiving,andthoughthehadneverseenanythingmorelovely.

           “I’llseeyouagainto-morrow,”hesaid,joyously,“andwe’lltalkovertheplans.”

           Hewalkedonwithher,elatedbeyondwords,sodelightfulhadbeentheresult.Heimpressedalongstoryofjoyandaffectionuponher,thoughtherewasbuthereandthereaword.Afterahalf-hourhebegantorealisethatthemeetingmustcometoanend,soexactingistheworld.

           “To-morrow,”hesaidatparting,agayetyofmanneraddingwonderfullytohisbravedemeanour.
