Insofarasthedaughteroftheseparentswasconcerned,andinthefaceofnaturalgiftswhichfittedherforsomethingbetterthanthisworldfromwhichshederived,shewasstill,inpart,atleast,areflectionofthereligiousandmoralnotionsthereandthenprevailing—theviewsofthelocalministersandthelaityingeneral.Atthesametime,becauseofawarm,imaginative,sensuoustemperament,shewasfilled—onceshereachedfifteenandsixteen—withtheworld-olddreamofallofEve’sdaughtersfromthehomeliesttothefairest—thatherbeautyorcharmmightsomedayanderelongsmitebewitchinglyandsoirresistiblythesoulofagivenmanormen.
Soitwasthatalthoughthroughoutherinfancyandgirlhoodshewascompelledtohearofandshareadeprivingandtoilsomepoverty,still,becauseofherinnateimagination,shewasalwaysthinkingofsomethingbetter.Maybe,someday,whoknew,alargercitylikeAlbanyorUtica!Anewerandgreaterlife.
