AsfortheparentsofRoberta,theywereexcellentexamplesofthatnativetypeofAmericanismwhichresistsfactsandreveresillusion.TitusAldenwasoneofthatvastcompanyofindividualswhoareborn,passthroughanddieoutoftheworldwithouteverquitegettinganyonethingstraight.Theyappear,blunder,andendinafog.Likehistwobrothers,botholderandalmostasnebulous,Tituswasafarmersolelybecausehisfatherhadbeenafarmer.Andhewashereonthisfarmbecauseithadbeenwilledtohimandbecauseitwaseasiertostayhereandtrytoworkthisthanitwastogoelsewhere.HewasaRepublicanbecausehisfatherbeforehimwasaRepublicanandbecausethiscountywasRepublican.Itneveroccurredtohimtobeotherwise.And,asinthecaseofhispoliticsandhisreligion,hehadborrowedallhisnotionsofwhatwasrightandwrongfromthoseabouthim.Asingle,serious,intelligentorrightlyinformingbookhadneverbeenreadbyanymemberofthisfamily—notone.Buttheywereneverthelessexcellent,asconventions,moralsandreligionsgo—honest,upright,God-fearingandrespectable.
