Thesevariousdistinguishedindividualscameandwent,singlyasarule,andwiththenoiselessvigorandreservethatcharacterizestheultrasuccessful.Theyoftenatealone,conferredinpairsandgroups,noiselessly—readtheirpapersorbooks,orwenthereandthereinswiftlydrivenautomobiles—butforthemostpartseemedtobeunawareof,oratleastunaffectedby,thatelementofpassion,which,tohisimmatureminduptothistime,hadseemedtopropelanddisarrangesomanythingsinthoselesserworldswithwhichuptonowhehadbeenidentified.
Probablyonecouldnotattaintoorretainone’splaceinsoremarkableaworldasthisunlessonewereindifferenttosex,adisgracefulpassion,ofcourse.Andhenceinthepresenceorundertheeyesofsuchpeopleonehadtoactandseemasthoughsuchthoughtsasfromtimetotimeswayedonewerefarfromone’smind.
