Indeed,forthemostpartthesedays,andinspiteofthepeculiarclimaxwhichhadeventuatedinconnectionwithEsta,helivedinakeen,sweetandsensualdreaminregardtoher.Ifonlyshewouldreallycometocareforhim.Atnight,inhisbedathome,hewouldlieandthinkofher—herface—theexpressionsofhermouthandeyes,thelinesofherfigure,themotionsofherbodyinwalkingordancing—andshewouldflickerbeforehimasuponascreen.Inhisdreams,hefoundherdeliciouslynearhim,pressingagainsthim—herdelightfulbodyallhis—andtheninthemomentofcrisis,whenseeminglyshewasabouttoyieldherselftohimcompletely,hewouldawaketofindhervanished—anillusiononly.
