           Andinconsequence,hewasinconstantdoubtastowherehestood,astatewhichwasverymuchrelishedbyherandyetwhichwasneverpermittedtobecomesofixedinhismindastocausehimtogiveherupentirely.Aftersomepartyordinnerortheatertowhichshehadpermittedhimtotakeher,andthroughoutwhichhehadbeenparticularlytactfulnottooassertiveshecouldbeasyieldingandenticinginhermoodasthemostambitiousloverwouldhaveliked.Andthismightlastuntiltheeveningwasnearlyover,whensuddenly,andatherowndoorortheroomorhouseofsomegirlwithwhomshewasspendingthenight,shewouldturn,andwithoutrhymeorreason,endeavortodismisshimwithamerehandclasporathinlyflavoredembraceorkiss.Atsuchtimes,ifClydewasfoolishenoughtoendeavortoforcehertoyieldthefavorshecraved,shewouldturnonhimwiththefuryofaspitefulcat,wouldtearherselfaway,developingforthemoment,seemingly,anintensemoodofoppositionwhichshecouldscarcelyhaveexplainedtoherself.Itschiefmentalcontentappearedtobeoneofoppositiontobeingcompelledbyhimtodoanything.And,becauseofhisinfatuationandhisweakoverturesduetohisinordinatefearoflosingher,hewouldbeforcedtodepart,usuallyinadarkanddespondentmood.

           Butsokeenwasherattractionforhimthathecouldnotlongremainaway,butmustbegoingabouttowheremostlikelyhewouldencounterher.
