Itwaslikethisinthoseshort,horribledaysbetweenthereturnofhismotherandtheReverendMcMillanfromtheirfinalvisittotheGovernorandinhislasthourthatClydethoughtandprayed—yetfinallyinakindofpsychicterror,evokedbyhisuncertaintyastothemeaningofthehereafter,hiscertaintyofdeath,andthefaithandemotionsofhismother,aswellasthoseoftheReverendMcMillan,whowasabouteverydaywithhisinterpretationsofdivinemercyandhisexhortationsastothenecessityofcompletefaithandrelianceuponit,he,himselfcomingatlasttobelieve,notonlymusthehavefaithbutthathehadit—andpeace—completeandsecure.Inthatstate,andattherequestoftheReverendMcMillan,andhismother,finallycomposing,withthepersonalaidandsupervisionofMcMillan,whochangedsomeofthesentencesinhispresenceandwithhisconsent,anaddresstotheworld,andmoreparticularlytoyoungmenofhisownyears,whichread:
